Hey everyone, guess what? 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of the world’s most popular muscle car, ze Ford Mustang. Yup, that’s right: you’re actually that old.
What makes me kind of excited about this is that I get to call my mom and ask about her old Mustang. The first ride she had was a 1978 Ford Mustang Cobra, and she was about as bad-ass as you’d think she was driving that damned thing.
Unfortunately I wasn’t around to see it, since my birth spawned some rational conclusion that you can’t fit a baby seat in a two door muscle car. So in a partially short-sighted move, my great mother sold it off to get a family truck: a 1980 Ford Bronco. And yes, that’s the same truck that OJ used in his high speed getaway car. Except my dad installed a kick-ass speaker on it that I could yell at people through with a CB radio. My lineage of ass-kicking parents is just as kick-ass as the cars they drove.
In lieu of this Thursday’s 50th anniversary party hosted by Ford, I received a neat little timeline that reminded us that 50 years of Mustang isn’t just Mustang; it’s about the music that travelled along with it.
Take a ride through history with the visual timeline below, starting from the Mustang’s debut model in 1964 to its newest 2015 model. As you take a ride with us, you’ll notice some iconic songs that have been named after the Mustang or have included it in the lyrics. In addition, you’ll have a chance to see how the way we enjoy music in the car has evolved, from 8-tracks to cassettes to CDs and more, the Mustang has evolved with the music created.
I had to of course, ask my mom her favourite song to drive to when that little Asian girl would rip up the streets of Saint John in a Mustang Cobra. “Reggie, that was 1978! *ponders* Ohhhhhh. Yeah. Stayin’ Alive. Bee Gees.”
